Tara Moore’s $20 million lawsuit against the WTA dismissed

Tara Moore’s $20 million lawsuit against the WTA has been dismissed by a judge. The player, who was handed a four-year doping ban, had sought the equivalent of €17.5 million over alleged irregularities in the handling of her suspension.

A former top British doubles player, Moore returned two positive tests for steroids in 2022. She had argued that the results were caused by eating contaminated meat in Colombia. After a provisional suspension that kept her out of competition for 19 months, her sanction was overturned by an independent tribunal.

However, the ITIA, the body responsible for integrity in tennis, took the case to an arbitration tribunal, which upheld the four-year ban. Moore then took the matter to arbitration with the WTA before filing proceedings against the tennis association in the United States after that initial route failed.

Her case was based on the argument that the WTA had not provided players with enough information about the risks of eating meat in certain countries. Her suspension, with Moore now aged 34, is due to end in December 2027.

Judge Andrew Carter found that there was no legal basis for Moore’s lawsuit and that the arbitration process had been fair.
