Real Madrid TV has attacked Atlético in a lengthy video focused on the club’s reactions to refereeing. The four-minute segment responds in particular to the “Stop referee harassment” campaign and to a post referring to “three weeks with the machine running at full speed”, accompanied by an image of José Mourinho after a derby.
The video revisits several episodes from recent years. Its voice-over says that when Atlético feel wronged, “respect disappears”, and accuses the club of demanding respect for referees only depending on the circumstances. “Now they demand respect, but if they do not like what they see, out comes the statement,” the narration also says.
Diego Simeone is the central figure in the montage. Real Madrid TV notably reprises his claim that La Liga was “dangerously prepared for Madrid”, as well as his press conference after a Champions League tie, when he asked anyone who had seen a double touch by Julián to raise their hand. The coach also appears in another heated moment during a match, with forceful words or gestures directed at referees.
The channel also broadcasts this line: “There is not much respect here; it is more a case of insults towards referees.” It also recalls an Atlético statement released after another recent derby, saying that “anyone observing it from the outside can see that the same thing has been happening for decades; the system is like this, we have got used to it.”
The montage also mentions a post published from Atlético’s official account asking supporters to “repost if you want the rules to be applied to everyone”. Over footage of Arda Turan throwing a boot towards an assistant referee, the voice-over stresses: “You ask for respect, but you post messages when what happens does not suit you. Respect disappears when things go badly. If decisions benefit you, you respect them; if they harm you, much less so.”
Lastly, Real Madrid TV refers to Gregorio Manzano, a former Atlético coach who now “appoints the referees”, according to the video.
