Gloucester produced a shock, emphatic 45-24 win away to Exeter Chiefs at Sandy Park on the opening weekend of the new season. The Cherry and Whites delivered an outstanding display, scoring seven tries.
The result carries particular weight after Gloucester won only once away from home during the previous campaign and finished eighth. They have already matched that away-win tally with their statement performance at Exeter.
Summer signing and new captain Dewi Lake, the Wales captain, led the way with two tries. Ben Loader also scored twice, while Seb Atkinson, Will Joseph with a fine individual effort, and Junior Denny with a try on his debut, completed Gloucester’s haul.
Exeter scored four tries. Josh Iosefa-Scott and Ethan Roots crossed in the first half before Stephen Varney and then Louie Gulley ensured the Chiefs at least collected a bonus point.
The scale of the defeat stands in contrast to Exeter’s previous season. The Chiefs reached the final in June, losing to Northampton Saints to finish as runners-up.
