Robbie Ure has gone from making his Scotland debut to facing a challenge that remains at Sevilla. Signed in the latest transfer window, the forward started yesterday against Slovenia on the opening matchday of the UEFA Nations League. He hit the post late in the first half and played 67 minutes.
Ure has one more commitment before returning to Seville. Having joined the club in Nervión from IK Sirius, he signed for Sevilla until 2031. The forward, one of the summer arrivals, is reportedly yet to score for Sevilla.
Ure was the number 9 sought by Luis García Plaza following Akor Adams’ transfer to Venezia. The Nigerian has recorded three goals and one assist in seven official matches. Sevilla moved ahead of clubs from the Premier League, Serie A, Ligue 1 and the Turkish league that had been closely monitoring the Scot’s progress.
At 22, Ure was coming off an outstanding season in Sweden, where he scored 20 goals in 20 matches before moving to Sevilla. His profile is not limited to finishing: over the first seven matchdays, he has stood out for his physical work, dropping deep, receiving with his back to goal and shielding the ball. He has taken five shots, four of them off target.
The attacking competition provides another benchmark: Akor Adams and De Jong took longer than Ure to score, while Lucas Stassin has so far been the quickest of this season’s signings to make an impact in front of goal. The Belgian scored away to Espanyol after playing only 31 minutes. Recovering from his injury, he is expected to return against Levante or Real Madrid depending on his progress, and the international break has benefited him.
Scotland will host Switzerland at Hampden Park on Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. on the second matchday of the group. For Ure, this first international appearance marks another step in his career, while many months of competition remain and his first Sevilla goal remains unfinished business.
