Ireland beat Israel 3-0 in a tense Nations League match

The Republic of Ireland comfortably beat Israel 3-0 in a Nations League match dominated by controversy. Ireland’s goals came in quick succession during an excellent first half, in what was the most controversial match of this Sunday.

The fixture had already been surrounded by tension following Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu’s refusal to play against Israel because of the conflict in Gaza. Before kick-off, the Irish players entered the pitch wearing black armbands. It was their collective protest against what they consider to be a genocide in Gaza.

The Irish players also refused to shake hands with the Israeli players during the pre-match protocol. Their captain did not shake hands with his counterpart Manor Solomon after the toss either. During the Israeli anthem, the Irish players bowed their heads as a sign of mourning.

On the pitch, Moylan kissed his armband after scoring the goal for 3-0 in the 25th minute, in a gesture of solidarity with Palestine.

Racist chants targeting Black Irish player Adam Idah were also heard from the few Israeli supporters in attendance. In a half-empty stadium in Debrecen, Hungary, this series of incidents pushed the football into the background.
