Nations League: Klopp suffers first Germany defeat against Greece

Jürgen Klopp suffered his first defeat as Germany head coach on Sunday, as his side lost 1-0 to Greece in Augsburg in the Nations League. Leaders of Group A2, Greece recorded their first victory in history over the German national team.

Klopp had made his debut on Thursday in a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands, then under Xavi Hernández for the first time. This time, Germany controlled much of the match but lacked precision.

Barcelona player Karim Adeyemi had Germany’s two clearest first-half chances. In the 26th minute, he led a very good counterattack down the left flank. He then created another opening after controlling the ball well before striking with his left foot, but Greece goalkeeper Tzolakis made a fine save.

Tzolakis also produced three other very good saves, including one against Serge Gnabry, who came on in the 75th minute for Adeyemi. By then, Germany were already 1-0 down.

In the second half, Greece gradually managed to ease Germany’s grip and began to threaten Alexander Nübel’s goal. Ioannidis wasted a golden chance in the 67th minute, but Kourbelis did not miss in the 75th: his shot, deflected by Kimmich and placed close to the post, ended up in Nübel’s net.

After starting Marc-André ter Stegen in the first match, Klopp had opted for Nübel in the Germany goal this time.
