A professional padel tournament has been suspended in Argentina after two players were assaulted. The Association of Professional Padel Players (AJPP) event, held at the Lawn Tenis Club in La Rioja, could not complete its schedule and was cancelled following a series of incidents.
What was meant to be a decisive day in Argentina’s professional calendar ended unexpectedly in La Rioja. The situation arose after a quarter-final match. The tournament ended early after acts of violence and threats against Nico Egea and Julián Leite.
According to information that was circulated, Nico Egea and Julián Leite were reportedly subjected to physical assaults and threats by spectators at the venue. Given concerns over the safety of the athletes due to play in the final stages, the decision was made not to continue the competition.
The decision was reached by mutual agreement between the players involved in the semi-finals and the organisers. It came after the referee had to intervene and warn the players as well as a person outside the court who was hurling insults.
The tournament had begun on Wednesday 23 September and was due to run until Sunday 27. It offered 4,000 points towards the national rankings and prize money of 11 million pesos.
In a statement, the AJPP expressed regret over the events and said that “violence has no place in padel”.
