Gilberto Mora, Mexico record holder and reportedly on the radar of major European clubs

Gilberto Mora has emerged as one of the most talked-about players during the break in club competitions, driven by international fixtures. The Xolos de Tijuana forward scored his first goal for Mexico, following a dribble and composed finish, in the 1-1 draw with Colombia. At 17 years and 347 days, he became the youngest scorer in Mexico’s history.

A few days earlier, Mora had already become the youngest player to wear Mexico’s number 10 shirt, a decision made by head coach Rafa Márquez. The Gilberto Mora moment is therefore drawing closer after two years in which his name has been linked with FC Barcelona.

In Mexico, it is being claimed that Barça and Real Madrid are competing for his signing, with Borussia Dortmund among the other major European clubs interested. A key date is approaching: Mora turns 18 on 14 October 2026. FC Barcelona, however, has explained that it has made no move.

Two years ago, when he was only 15, the Mexican was first linked with Barça. In September 2024, TUDNMEX said that the Catalan club had invited him to train and visit La Masia and the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper. Mora made his first-team debut for Xolos de Tijuana on 18 August 2024, aged 15 years and 308 days.

His name continued to surface around Barcelona, notably in 2025, because of his performances and the presence of scouts from Barça’s sporting department. Last summer, his debut with Javier Aguirre’s senior side, aged 17 years and 240 days, also fuelled that attention. He became the sixth-youngest player in history to make his debut.

In June, Mora extended his contract until 2029, advised by Rafaela Pimienta, Erling Haaland’s agent. His deal reportedly includes a release clause of around €25 million for European clubs, a figure that would allow Xolos de Tijuana to benefit if he leaves as early as the winter transfer window.

Rafa Márquez compared Mora’s impact to what he had witnessed with Lamine Yamal at Barça: “It happened to me with Lamine Yamal. I brought him up and they took him away from me within a month. So, obviously, Gilberto has a similar style and profile.” After his goal, the Mexico coach stressed the need to support him: “We all know Gilberto’s quality. We have to try to protect him, to let him develop; he is still very young. We will all do everything possible to ensure he keeps growing. [...] I have no doubt that he will continue to develop and I hope we can see him at a major club.”

Before the European interest and his records with Mexico, the forward born in 2008 had already played four first-team matches, including one as a starter, totalling 166 minutes. He scored against Club León at 15 years and 320 days.
