“Pedro is the fastest,” Marc Márquez said, putting the pressure back on him ahead of the next stage of the MotoGP Japanese Grand Prix. Márquez was relatively satisfied with his first day: he finished third, went straight through to the fight for pole and showed good pace. The reigning champion nevertheless feels he is behind Pedro Acosta, the winner in Austria.
The rider also noted that the new asphalt offers substantial grip and is bringing the field closer together. “We have to keep working, especially to understand the rear tyre properly,” he said, adding that the bike’s balance seems to change depending on which tyre is used.
Márquez expects qualifying to be difficult because everyone should be fast. In his view, the rear tyre can deliver several competitive laps, creating more chances to set a strong one-lap time. He considers Pedro faster than him at present both in race pace and over one lap. Álex, meanwhile, produced a very good lap on the soft rear tyre but is struggling more with the medium. Márquez therefore plans to try the soft option. He also named Bezzecchi, Ogura and Martín among the riders who have already been quick. Márquez believes the new surface is helping to tighten the field.
