Iago Aspas will have a statue in the spring, during what will be his final season as an active player. Described as the most important player in Celta’s 103-year history, he is set to receive several tributes. The sculpture will stand at the corner of the Tribuna and Marcador stands at Balaídos stadium.
A design competition received 19 proposals. The winning project has yet to be chosen by a jury that includes, among others, Jonathan Aspas, the player’s brother, and Carlos Cao, Celta’s director of infrastructure and institutional relations, representing the club.
The winner will have three months to complete the sculpture. It must be made of artistic bronze, measure 1.76 centimetres—the player’s stated real-life height—and depict him wearing Celta’s kit.
The statue is part of a series of tributes planned for Aspas. This season, the Tribuna stand at Balaídos stadium will also bear his name, while other celebrations are being prepared.
