Ben Whittaker beat Conor Wallace by unanimous decision in an IBF title eliminator in Birmingham, but had to withstand a torrid final round. An Olympic silver medallist and unbeaten professional prospect, Whittaker was looking to move towards world level against Wallace.
Whittaker dominated the first half of the fight by controlling the distance. He remained comfortably ahead after nine rounds, despite Wallace’s resistance and some moments of showboating.
The fight turned when Wallace landed a powerful shot in the 10th round. He then took advantage of Whittaker’s low hands to keep up the pressure. In the 12th and final round, Wallace badly shook Whittaker, who had to hang on to reach the end of the fight.
The judges ultimately gave Whittaker the victory on scores of 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113. The win is confirmed, but the final-round scare contrasted with the control he had shown for much of the contest.
