The Copa brings back the Xerez-Cádiz derby after 18 years

The Copa will revive the Xerez-Cádiz derby, 18 years on. Monday’s draw for the Copa del Rey, held at the Ciudad del Fútbol de Las Rozas, paired Xerez CD with Cádiz in a tie to be played at Chapín. The Segunda Federación club will host Albert Celades’s team.

The fixture ends a long wait: the sides have not met in an official competition for more than 18 years. Chapín will once again stage a meeting rich in history. In an earlier match at the ground, the home side won 2-1.

The cup gives Xerez CD the chance to spring a surprise against an opponent two levels above. The teams come into the tie on the back of different results: Xerez beat Tenerife B 2-1 in Abel Segovia’s first match in charge, while Celades’s Cádiz won 4-0 against Leganés.

The knockout tie will be played at Chapín, with Xerez CD hosting Albert Celades’s team. Their last official meeting was in 2008.
