Matthias Ginter has extended his contract with Freiburg and will continue his career with the Bundesliga club. The 32-year-old centre-back has signed a new deal, but its length has not been disclosed. He now has 255 appearances for Freiburg across two spells.
Ginter returned in 2022 to his boyhood club after leaving Borussia Mönchengladbach and has become an important part of the team. Freiburg have made sustained progress in recent seasons, with the defender playing a central role in that development. He also brings international experience from representing Germany to a squad that continues to pursue European qualification.
“We want to continue writing this shared success story and are maximally ambitious,” Ginter said. Saier praised the player’s consistency: “The level and consistency of his performances are impressive and have shaped the overall sporting development of the team.”
The extension gives Freiburg continuity at the heart of its defence and keeps one of its most experienced players available for the next stage of the club’s development. It also retains a defender whose influence extends from the pitch to the dressing room. Still ambitious after many years in professional football, Ginter will remain with Freiburg beyond his 32nd birthday.
