Manchester United are interested in signing Youssouf Fofana in the winter transfer window, TeamTalk reports. The French midfielder scored the goal that put Sevilla ahead against Barcelona in Liga’s final match before the break and quickly became an indispensable part of Luis García Plaza’s plans at the start of the campaign. At 27, he has established himself as a key player for his coach.
Fofana’s arrival at Sevilla became possible after an agreement between Milan and Olympique de Marseille fell through. The Andalusian club was presented with what was considered an especially attractive market opportunity. The French club involved could not free up a place in its squad and therefore could not register the player; Sevilla’s sporting department moved quickly to complete the deal, adding strength to García Plaza’s squad.
Fofana has made only four appearances in a Sevilla shirt, but several major European clubs are already following his progress. An established international, he has played 25 times for the French national team and scored three goals.
A January move would not be straightforward. Sevilla has a loan agreement with Milan that runs until 30 June and must be honoured. Fofana’s performances give the Andalusian club little reason to facilitate his departure, particularly as the financial terms are highly favourable to Sevilla: it covers only a small portion of the player’s substantial salary.
