“I am strong and convinced that I can turn this around,” Manolo González said. The Espanyol coach was speaking at a press conference before Friday’s trip to Málaga, which opens a new round of the domestic league. After a run of recent results he described as poor, his side wants to improve and collect points. It is also looking to return to winning ways after several weeks without league football.

“We are looking forward to the match and trying to get the three points, compete and recover the good feeling we had before the last few games,” González said. He also said he had worked on several aspects of the team’s play: defensive and attacking adjustments are intended to bring more balance and help the side attack better. He did not reveal his starting line-up, saying that would become clear when match time arrives.

The coach said he feels supported by the players and grateful to them, adding that they have shown that support through both words and actions. He also spoke of the confidence shown in him by sporting director Monchi, which he said he values, while stressing his determination to find solutions and change the situation. “I’m well, strong and convinced I can turn things around and that the team will improve,” he said.

González played down the significance of criticism, describing it as part of the job, while saying frustration after the defeat to Elche was understandable. He urged people not to “burn everything down in two days”, noting that the season is still at an early stage. He also defended his players against attacks directed at them after that match.

Ahead of the game in Málaga, the coach described the opposition as an attacking, adventurous team capable of playing well. In his view, Málaga did not deserve to lose against Getafe or in its match against Depor. “We know it will be demanding,” he warned. He added that pressure has been part of his experience since he arrived and does not depend on Málaga’s position in the standings.

On team availability, González said 24 players, including the goalkeepers, are included for the trip, with everyone available except Kike García. Javi Puado could get playing time depending on how he feels, while Javi Hernández is fit to play. Vanja has also arrived in good condition. Kike García is continuing the normal progress of his injury; Gorosabel and Javi Puado are training with the group.
