Jonathan David joined Atlético on the final day of the transfer window in an unexpected move. The striker has been one of the club’s early-season surprises, having been on its radar since his time at Lille.

Juventus had moved ahead of much of Europe when David became a free agent, but his first season in Italy was disappointing. Despite the doubts raised by that spell, Atlético secured his loan with a €25 million purchase option. The Canadian had previously excelled at Lille, scoring more than 100 goals; in Italy, he managed only eight in a subdued season. Atlético also had reservations.

Canada coach Jesse Marsch said he helped Atlético Madrid through its affiliated club, Atlético Ottawa, which plays in the Canadian Premier League. The aim was to give decision-makers at the Metropolitano first-hand information before they took the step.

Marsch recounted the advice he gave Ottawa’s officials: «I simply told them: “Look, I know Simeone because I’ve faced him and watched him for years. If you’re looking for a striker who can score goals, has great technical quality, works for the team and gives everything, I don’t see a better goalscorer than Jonathan David.”»
