De Jong rejoined the group led by Hansi Flick last Tuesday. A return to matches is not yet assured: if he feels well as training intensity increases, he could be cleared to play in the coming weeks. The signs are encouraging, after he chose non-surgical treatment despite the club medical team recommending an operation.
His knee is responding well, but Barcelona will continue to monitor his progress. Flick has confirmed to him that he will not play until he has fully recovered. Training at the same pace as his teammates now represents an important test of his progress.
The stakes go beyond his recovery. In the first part of the season, Barcelona and its midfield performed at a particularly high level. The team won all its matches and dominated many opponents while producing impressive football. De Jong would therefore be returning to a highly competitive area of the team.

After last summer, which brought his injury and Flick’s decision to remove the captain’s armband and give it to Raphinha, the club hopes to focus on football.
