Uncertainty remains over Frenkie de Jong’s future at Barcelona, with a return to the pitch one possibility and a departure another. The Dutch midfielder reached an important stage in his recovery this week after tearing the collateral ligament in his right knee. The injury came after he overexerted himself during the World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
De Jong rejoined the group led by Hansi Flick last Tuesday. A return to matches is not yet assured: if he feels well as training intensity increases, he could be cleared to play in the coming weeks. The signs are encouraging, after he chose non-surgical treatment despite the club medical team recommending an operation.
His knee is responding well, but Barcelona will continue to monitor his progress. Flick has confirmed to him that he will not play until he has fully recovered. Training at the same pace as his teammates now represents an important test of his progress.
The stakes go beyond his recovery. In the first part of the season, Barcelona and its midfield performed at a particularly high level. The team won all its matches and dominated many opponents while producing impressive football. De Jong would therefore be returning to a highly competitive area of the team.
Rodri made an immediate impact, Marc Bernal emerged, and Pedri and Fermín López also impressed. Dani Olmo, Gavi and Bryan Farinas are waiting for their opportunities too, which could make chances in Barcelona’s midfield difficult to come by. De Jong believes he can earn his place back, but will need to impress in training to join a side that had been moving at great speed before the international break.
Previously, the former Ajax player had always said he wanted to remain at Barcelona. His time at Camp Nou has had more ups and downs than expected, but he does not plan to leave and wants to convince Flick through his performances. The coming months will help define his role in the coach’s project, while the sporting leadership monitors his match involvement ahead of the winter transfer window. One of the team’s highest-paid players, he is also attracting interest in the transfer market.
After last summer, which brought his injury and Flick’s decision to remove the captain’s armband and give it to Raphinha, the club hopes to focus on football. For now, the priority is for De Jong to continue his recovery without setbacks. A return to his usual level could amount to an “autumn signing” for Barcelona, but it is too early to resolve the uncertainty.
