Ahead of the trip to Anfield, Enzo Maresca stuck to the club’s line: confidence in its leadership and focus on the match, despite questions about the financial case.

Michael Carrick, Manchester United’s coach, said that Manchester City’s titles and the events surrounding them now belong to the past. Speaking about the financial-violation allegations against the club, which cover nine seasons, he stressed the need for the matter to move towards a resolution.
“It is very difficult to comment on this case in many ways. It has raised a lot of questions, some have been answered and others have not,” Carrick said. With the case still ongoing and its duration uncertain, he added that there were limits to what he could say. He also acknowledged having questions of his own and said the situation had affected him personally. “We have to wait and see what happens,” he said.
Carrick nevertheless called for a swift resolution. “It is necessary to settle this matter as quickly as possible, in everyone’s interest,” he said. The Premier League announced that the independent commission handling the case had confirmed Manchester City’s guilt over 114 breaches. The club has appealed the decision. If its appeal fails, it could face severe sanctions, including the removal of titles or relegation to lower divisions.
Carrick made the comments at a press conference on Friday ahead of Manchester United’s match against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday, in the sixth round of the Premier League. He also reflected on the title race against Manchester City when he played for Manchester United, the emotions of winning and losing, and the importance of the journey towards a goal as well as the decisive moment.
“Once that moment has passed, you can never relive it,” he said, distinguishing the events themselves from what a person feels in the moment. He added that those emotions, shared by players and supporters, are one reason they love football. The proceedings concerning Manchester City, meanwhile, remain ongoing.
