Lewis Hamilton is celebrating progress in the push for an African Grand Prix in Formula 1. The sport’s return to the continent, its first since 1993, is taking shape in Rwanda, where a deal for a race by the 2030 season is being finalised. For the Scuderia Ferrari driver, the announcement is a major personal victory.

Hamilton has long backed the idea of an African race. He had previously said he would delay his retirement until Formula 1 officially secured a return to the continent. “I’ve always said that we need to have a grand prix in Africa,” he said. He added: “It is, for me, the most important continent, to be honest, and the most beautiful continent.”

South Africa had seemed the most straightforward option, but Hamilton had previously revealed that he held private discussions with Rwandan officials. He praised their commitment and long-term vision. Rwanda’s selection is a disappointment for South African fans who had expected the Kyalami circuit to host Formula 1’s return.

South African Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie conceded this week that his country had lost the bid and confirmed the timeline for the Rwandan Grand Prix. “We are happy for Rwanda’s 2030 F1. They have worked on it longer than South Africa and deserve it,” he said. McKenzie nevertheless said South Africa was not giving up and could secure a race even before the Rwandan launch.
