Rayo-Athletic was halted in the 13th minute when small balls thrown onto the pitch made it impossible to continue for ten minutes. The incident was part of Rayo supporters’ protests against Presa, which disrupted the course of the match.
The protest was collective and had initially been intended to involve only paper balls, but the action in the stands took several forms. Spectators received instructions at the stadium entrance for a protest display involving whistles and paper planes. Tiny balls were also thrown from the only end stand in Vallecas. Those balls prevented the match from proceeding normally and led to the temporary stoppage.
The demonstrations accompanied Rayo’s return to competition in Vallecas. No official match had been played at the stadium since May, and supporters marked the return with protests against Presa. The ten-minute interruption was the protest’s clearest effect on the game: the objects thrown onto the pitch made it impossible to carry on, while whistles and paper planes were part of the display spectators had been asked to join.
