After an independent commission’s verdict against Manchester City, Sunderland manager Le Bris is calling for a firm response from the authorities. An independent commission concluded that Manchester City had committed major violations of the league’s financial rules during the nine seasons spanning 2009/10 to 2017/18. It also upheld most of the allegations concerning City’s failure to cooperate with the investigation.
The club denies wrongdoing and has appealed. Any sanctions that could follow the verdict have yet to be determined. The commission concluded that commercial arrangements had artificially inflated City’s revenue and reduced its costs. The legal process is continuing, leaving both the appeal’s outcome and the case’s ultimate consequences unresolved.
For Le Bris, the issue goes beyond one club and reaches the credibility of the competition. “The competent authorities must be inflexible. Otherwise, the competition loses all its value,” the Sunderland manager said. He argues that the same rules must apply to every club and that governing bodies must show those rules have practical force.
“My position is simple: football has rules, on and off the pitch. These rules must be respected. Any infraction must result in consequences,” he added. Le Bris acknowledged that Sunderland was not directly involved in the case, while stressing that the principle also matters to clubs outside the top end of the table. “Otherwise, it is not fair, and we want a fair competition, where fair play reigns. We were not there with Sunderland, but it is about respecting the rules,” he said. For him, without rules, “there is no competition.”
The appeal and any eventual sanctions will shape what happens next. Le Bris has made clear what he sees as the essential test: rules must be enforced consistently, regardless of a club’s size or success.
