Gennaro Gattuso’s Lazio beat Monza 3-1 at the Stadio Olimpico to draw level with Inter, the new Serie A leaders on goal difference. Inter had beaten Parma 3-0 the previous day, while Roma drew 0-0 today away to Como, coached by Cesc Fàbregas.
Nuno Tavares opened the scoring in the 3rd minute, and Gustav Isaksen made it 2-0 in the 23rd. The win was Lazio’s fifth in the first six rounds, taking the club to 16 points out of 18 and keeping it unbeaten. Lazio have also made the best start to a season in their history, although the stands at the Stadio Olimpico continue to show low attendance.
In this match, Lorenzo Lucchesi was sent off in the 35th minute for pulling back Tijjani Noslin as he broke clear towards goal. Despite being down a player, Monza caused Lazio problems after the break. Monza, 16th with 4 points, made life difficult for the Romans.
For Gattuso, this season marks a return to the dugout after his unsuccessful spell in charge of Italy, who missed out on a World Cup for the third consecutive time. Lazio have maintained their excellent start and remain level with Inter at the top of the league.
