Bayer Leverkusen hope Eliesse Ben Seghir can overcome his physical problems and turn around his difficult start at the club. Another injury has interrupted the Moroccan international’s progress, but the club remain hopeful he can recover his momentum. His repeated fitness issues have become a source of frustration at Leverkusen.
After Leverkusen’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Mainz, Simon Rolfes indicated that the 21-year-old’s latest issue was unlikely to keep him out for long. He also suggested the forward would not be out for long. That assessment offers some reassurance, but does not confirm a return date.
“He will not be out for long. This is not a serious injury, but it is obviously frustrating because the problems have continued for him. We hope this will be the last injury,” Rolfes said.
Ben Seghir has yet to score or provide an assist in 16 appearances, according to figures reported in Germany. Leverkusen have not given up on the youngster. In 2025, the club signed him from Monaco for a reported €32 million, but he has yet to meet the expectations that accompanied his arrival.
Ben Seghir has earned 20 caps for Morocco and arrived in Germany with first-team experience from Monaco. Leverkusen hope an uninterrupted spell of training can help him bring his qualities to the Bundesliga. Martínez also said: “Eli wants to play and help the team. But he has to learn to deal with his body better and manage it.”
