Real Madrid defeated Roma 1-0 at the Tre Fontane stadium in the second round of the Youth Champions League. Madrid captain Carlos Díez scored the only goal midway through the second half. The ball came back off the right-hand post and dropped inside the six-yard area, where Díez turned it into the net.
Both sides had won their opening match and were aiming to join the teams with two victories. The result puts the side coached by Álvaro López among the five teams to have won their first two games.
Real Madrid had more possession in the first half. Roma, set up with five defenders, committed 14 fouls and received three yellow cards. The holders, however, did not turn their possession into clear-cut chances: they had five shots, none from a position of obvious danger. Madrid then increased the pressure and moved closer to the opposition goal. One final warning from Real Madrid came before Díez’s decisive finish.
In the next round, Real Madrid will host Leipzig on Wednesday, 21 October, at 16:00.
