Manchester City were beaten 4-2 by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, in a spectacular match watched from the stands by Pep Guardiola on his return to the Etihad. PSG showed their command early: Luis Enrique’s side produced an impressive first half, controlling the ball and the game without it. The reigning European champions, twice over, sought to make their strength felt quickly at the Etihad in a match that showcased the quality of the opposition.
After the break, Erling Haaland scored twice for Manchester City. The response made the scoreline less severe and spared Guardiola the sight of his former side suffering an even heavier defeat. City’s players also appeared highly focused despite the uncertainty surrounding the club.
The two teams’ rivalry sits within a recent history: before winning three of the last four Champions League titles, Manchester City and PSG had won none of the previous 67. Each had also lost its first final in the competition: PSG against Bayern in 2020, then City against Chelsea the following year.
Manchester City is also facing accusations of financial rule-breaking on the domestic front, which the club denies. Guardiola was joined in the stands by several senior City executives, including chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak and chief executive Ferran Soriano, in a display of unity. The defeat does not, by itself, carry any major consequence announced here, but supporters made clear before kick-off that they would stand by the club through difficult times. They might not see their side in this competition next year.
