Athletic comes off worse from the decision announced after its match against Rayo Vallecano was definitively halted. Competición has proposed a 6,000-euro fine and the partial closure of the stand traditionally occupied by Bukaneros, a penalty viewed as insufficient in the Basque club’s circle.

The match was stopped after objects were thrown onto the pitch, with 24 minutes played, only 13 of them in actual playing time. The proposed punishment is directed at the Madrid club. It follows an interruption that brought the match to an end, rather than a game played through to its conclusion.

Athletic has made no official response, either at the time or since. The harm to the club also appears separate from the dispute between Martín Presa and Rayo supporters. The partial closure concerns the section associated with Bukaneros, while the events in Vallecas affected almost the entire home crowd, not just that group.

Against that backdrop, Competición’s ruling remains difficult to understand. The interests taken into account in the decision are not the ones Athletic considers its priorities. For the Basque club, the proposed punishment therefore does not fully address the consequences of the match being stopped.
