Vinícius Jr has vowed to rediscover his best form after Real Madrid’s comeback against Roma. The Brazilian forward acknowledged that he is currently short of his own expectations, but said he is confident he can bounce back. He also criticised the timing of the announcement of his four-match suspension from domestic fixtures.
He learned of the news when he arrived at the stadium, shortly before Wednesday’s Champions League match against AS Roma, in which he was substituted. “I think the suspension came at a bad time. They had the whole day to announce it, and I found out when I arrived at the stadium,” he said. Vinícius also regretted that the new rules had not been explained to the players. He said he had never committed an act of violence against another player and felt that decisions were often harsh on him.
The Brazilian’s frustration was not limited to the announcement: he admitted that he was unhappy to be substituted. He nevertheless recognised that the changes helped Madrid get back into the match. After falling 3-1 behind, the team turned the game around; Vinícius praised the impact of Endrick, who came on, and Antonio Rüdiger’s goal to complete the comeback. He also said the whistles from the stands did not help him, while stressing that the team played better with the crowd behind them. “Jude plays better, Mbappé plays better, I play better,” he said.
The forward believes his recent performances have fallen short of his own standards. “I am angry with myself because I am not at my best. In the end, Vini always comes back, and I have no doubts that I will come back,” he said. He also recalled the mockery he says he faced when he first arrived in Madrid, adding: “I am going to come back. […] I have scored more than 100 goals for Real Madrid.”
The suspension applies to domestic matches, leaving Vinícius available for Madrid’s European commitments. The comeback in Rome offers encouragement for the team, while the forward aims to answer his critics by regaining his best form.
