“Porto deserved something more,” Farioli said after his side’s 3-2 defeat to Betis at La Cartuja. The coach praised Porto’s work for much of the match, while also identifying a lack of accuracy near the opposition goal.
The loss was all the more frustrating because Porto had moved in front and had opportunities to extend its lead. After the 1-2, Farioli pointed to two or three chances involving Alberto that could have allowed them to “close out the match”. He described it as a “crazy game” and felt his side could have scored two or three more goals before the end.
“We played well, finding Alan Varela to create chances, but we rushed things in the final third,” he said. The coach also summed up the cost of mistakes in the Champions: “If we make mistakes, we pay for them double.” He nevertheless praised his opponents, calling them a “fantastic team” with players capable of deciding a match at important moments.
The defeat leaves Porto without a point after its first two European matches. Farioli urged his side to move on: “There is no negativity and we have to prepare for the match against PSV.” He added that a lot could still happen, but that Porto had to start with that next fixture.
