Cancelo could be a candidate for the false-nine role at Barcelona. The Portuguese full-back has been in notable scoring form, putting him forward as a possible replacement for Brazilian Raphinha in that position — a possibility, not an announced decision.
His recent numbers underpin the suggestion: across his last eight matches for Barcelona and the Portugal national team, he scored three goals and provided an assist, playing four games for each side. That attacking output stands out given his defensive role on the flank, while he has also shown an ability to create chances.
Cancelo scored against Galatasaray in Barcelona’s 4-1 victory. He has also opened the scoring twice this season: first against Racing in Liga, then against Galatasaray in the Champions League. The run began on 16 September with a goal against Racing in a 7-2 match. He came on as a substitute against Getafe on 10 October, then started on 13 October and scored his third goal in three matches against Galatasaray, who lost 1-4.
Mundo Deportivo says Barcelona’s left-back made full use of his tactical and physical qualities against Galatasaray and is at the peak of his form early in the 2026-2027 season. That assessment helps explain why the position has been raised as an option, but does not amount to confirmation that Cancelo will start as a false nine.
