Hansi Flick confirmed that Raphinha and Frenkie de Jong were available before FC Barcelona released its list of called-up players. The announcement came ahead of the trip to Seville to face Betis. “They are available,” the coach said, adding that both players would be included in the squad list.
Flick is still keen to manage their returns carefully. Raphinha had been out for two weeks, while De Jong had not played since the last World Cup. With three very important matches ahead, the coach stressed the need for a gradual return. “If you ask Raphinha, he’ll tell you he’s ready, but for me it’s step by step,” he said, adding that the Brazilian had trained well with the group the previous day. The team will also need to adapt to a crowded schedule over the coming days and weeks.
A role at centre-back is one possibility for De Jong. Flick welcomed Frenkie’s return and said he could give the team another option, while adding that he wanted to see how the player progressed. He believes the midfielder is ready to play some minutes. The coach acknowledged, however, that the team had not worked much with De Jong in that position.
Flick also addressed competition within the squad. In his view, the quality of the available players makes it difficult to maintain balance, but it pushes starters to give their all and keeps the whole group focused.
