“I did not intend to offend Saudi players,” Conceição said, responding to criticism over reported remarks about cultural differences and discipline within teams. The former Al-Ittihad coach says his comments were interpreted inaccurately and that he was not trying to criticise Saudi football.

In a statement posted to his official Instagram story, the Portuguese coach explained that he had answered two questions about his experience in Saudi Arabia. He said he was surprised to see his words presented as criticism of the country’s football. Conceição insists he neither sought to demean local players nor disrespect the Kingdom, which welcomed him and his family and for which he says he has esteem and respect.

The controversy followed comments attributed to him during an appearance on the “La Tripletta” podcast. He was reported to have discussed differences in commitment and professional culture between local and foreign players, as well as instances in which a player might miss training for family or religious reasons. After the remarks circulated, critics accused him of insulting Saudi players or questioning their ability.

Conceição rejects that interpretation. He says he did not describe Saudi players as poor players or challenge their quality. He says his comments concerned differences between football practices in Saudi Arabia and Europe, and the challenge of adapting after 13 or 14 years working in European stadiums.

During his spell at Al-Ittihad, where he led the technical staff for about 8 months, the club finished fifth in the Roshn Saudi League and secured a place in the AFC Champions League Elite. Conceição also described his experience in the Kingdom as important, saying it gave him the opportunity to learn and gain a broader understanding of athletes and their approach to football, despite difficulties adapting to some aspects of the new environment.

He also acknowledged that the financial aspect was one reason for his move to the Saudi league. At Al-Ittihad, he added, the management relies on results and supporters’ reactions on social media.
