Chase Carey says MotoGP cannot simply copy Formula 1

Chase Carey says MotoGP cannot simply adopt the formula of the documentary series « Drive to Survive », which has accompanied Formula 1’s growth. Liberty acquired 84% of Dorna Sports in July 2025; the company is now known as MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group.
« You can’t just copy », Carey said, arguing that MotoGP must find its own way to reach a wider audience. He acknowledged that the two championships may share some needs, but stressed the distinctive qualities of motorcycle racing. In his view, the sport has its own identity and cannot mechanically apply Formula 1’s model.
« In some ways, MotoGP is even crazier », he said, describing riders who appear to be leaning almost against the ground on their motorcycles. He also stressed that the sport has characteristics of its own. The process, he said, is still at an early stage, with strategies and growth opportunities for the championship yet to be developed.
Formula 1 offers a point of comparison, but not a ready-made blueprint. « Drive to Survive » has been credited with introducing F1 to a new audience. The series also benefited from the circumstances of the COVID-19 lockdowns, which began a few weeks after its second season was released. Carey acknowledged that the show was the clearest example, while noting that other sports had tried to follow its path. He cited golf and « Full Swing », as well as tennis and « Break Point ».
For Carey, the challenge is to give the sport’s personalities greater visibility and keep fans connected beyond race day. He described a digital world that runs around the clock: the live race remains the central experience, but fans also follow clips and behind-the-scenes activity. He said the United States is currently the biggest YouTube market for his sport. He also described « Drive to Survive » as a central part of Formula 1’s digital efforts.
That thinking accompanies MotoGP’s development ambitions. With 11 of the 12 highest-placed riders in the 2026 MotoGP championship coming from Spain or Italy, the group wants to broaden the mix in motorcycle grands prix. It also wants to expand its presence in the United States. Carey’s advice is to pursue opportunities that fit the championship rather than reproduce a Formula 1 series or film. « They have to follow their own path and find their own opportunities », he said.
