Franck Haise returned to a three-defender system when Rennes travelled to Turin on Thursday for their Europa League match. Rennes shared the points with Juventus in a 2-2 draw, which RMC Sport described as a missed opportunity for a prestigious victory.

The coach could use the system again on Sunday, when Rennes host Strasbourg at Roazhon Park. Rennes put in a convincing European performance against Juventus. The 2,300 Rennes supporters in a packed section made their voices heard, while the crowd at Juventus Stadium fell quiet for long spells.

The change came after Rennes’ performances had drawn criticism in recent weeks. The team sat fifth in Ligue 1, one point behind the leaders, and had the league’s best attack after seven matchdays. Its Europa League campaign had also started well, with one win and two draws. But Rennes had lost their previous two away games, 4-0 at Lyon and 4-3 at Paris FC, conceding eight goals across those matches. Control and defensive solidity were among the concerns.

The idea of switching from 4-3-3 to 3-5-2 is said to have taken shape after the defeat at Stade Jean-Bouin, although Haise had already been considering it. Anthony Rouault said the change had been discussed after Sunday’s match, adding that he had not heard about it beforehand. The new coach had only two training sessions, alongside extensive video work, to prepare the formation.

Haise said the system had given his side greater stability and protection, while helping them play the ball out against Juventus’ pressing. “I’m proud of the match, the performance, the attitude and the team’s character, but it isn’t a feat because we didn’t win,” he stressed. Habib Beye’s 3-5-2 had frustrated Breton supporters for many months, while the 4-3-3 later brought renewed energy to the club.

Valentin Rongier said discussions with senior players had informed the coach’s thinking. The captain also pointed to the surprise Rennes caused Juventus and the value of being able to switch systems. Haise said the option could be worked on again and used from time to time. With five points from a possible nine in the Europa League, Rennes now turn their attention to Sunday’s Ligue 1 match against Strasbourg.
