Villarreal thrashed 6-0 by PSG as Pape Gueye struggles to sleep

Villarreal suffered a 6-0 home defeat to PSG on Tuesday, in the competition’s fourth round. Pape Gueye started and quickly wanted to review the game with his team’s video analyst. The score was already 4-0 by the end of the opening quarter-hour. Usually a valuable presence for Villarreal, the midfielder could not stem the Parisian dominance.

The defeat stayed with him overnight. “It’s hard to sleep. I didn’t sleep much… We’re trying to understand what happened. It’s the first time I’ve conceded six goals in a match,” Pape Gueye said in an interview with DAZN. He also wanted to go over the Villarreal-PSG match with his video analyst straight away.

The Senegalese midfielder singled out the collective movement of the Paris players. “Their midfielders weren’t the only ones moving all over the place. It was really collective,” he observed, referring to the movement of Hakimi and Mayulu. For Gueye, the challenge was not confined to one area of the pitch: several PSG players were moving to unsettle Villarreal.

The defeat leaves Villarreal on three points in the competition. Ninth in Liga, the club will travel to Prague to face Slavia in the next round. In the league, Villarreal have 12 points after 11 matches and also sit ninth. Their record stands at three wins, three draws and five defeats, with 15 goals scored and 15 conceded. Across their last five Liga matches, they have won twice, drawn once and lost twice.
