Gran Canaria is entering a new chapter with a president and sponsor. Cajasiete Gran Canaria has officially launched its “Subscribe” season, with Josemi Alamo at the helm of the club and Cajasiete arriving as its new partner.
At the presentation of the sponsor and the new president, José Miguel Álamo set out his approach before the press: “Everything has already been invented. I have come to contribute, to lend a hand, to try to ensure the players are happy and the fans are happy too.”
Álamo has extensive political experience linked to the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the management of several areas of public administration. He served as the island institution’s councillor from 2003 to 2007, before taking on responsibilities in Education, University and New Technologies, Agriculture, and Social Policy.
From 2015 to 2019, he was a councillor on Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council within the group led by Juan José Cardona. He returned to the Cabildo in May 2021 as a member of the Popular Group and, during the 2023-2027 term, remains an opposition councillor. He currently also serves as vice-rector for Culture and Society at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
His presidency begins at one of the most demanding moments in the club’s recent history. Following relegation, the main sporting challenge will be to regain a Liga Endesa place as quickly as possible.
His arrival also marks the start of a new institutional phase for a publicly owned entity. The new leadership will have to consolidate the club’s economic and social stability while addressing the sporting challenge, with the aim of returning Gran Canaria to the top tier of Spanish basketball.
