The controversy arose from an article by Juanma Castaño in ABC, in which the journalist compared Real Madrid TV with the newspaper “Gara”, formerly close to the terrorist organisation ETA. On Tuesday afternoon, Real Madrid responded with a statement, condemning the comparison and expressing its anger.
The club described the comparison made by the COPE journalist as “absolutely deplorable and unacceptable”. In its statement, Real Madrid said that comparing its official media outlet with a newspaper “whose history is linked to the world of the terrorist organisation ETA” was “an extremely serious exercise that crosses every line”.
At the heart of the episode was Castaño’s column, entitled “Real Madrid, at war”, which set out his view of what happened in the controversial derby against Atlético, both on the pitch and after the match.
In that article, the journalist wrote: “Hard weeks are coming. On the official television channel, which is the ‘Gara’ newspaper of ultra-Florentinismo, they are calling for national competitions to be abandoned. They complain that replays are not shown to them and, in the derby, we logically saw those two challenges clearly and immediately, from every possible angle. Once again, the world is against Madrid. Everyone is against Madrid. Even the person who, from an Atlético protocol office, had the idea, or the obligation, to invite Enrique Riquelme to the directors’ box, a kind of antichrist who brings out the worst in Florentino’s entourage. The same old ‘with me or against me’.”
Later that night, on “El Partidazo de COPE”, Castaño revisited his wording. “I withdraw the comparison, but Real Madrid TV lies, manipulates, singles out and harasses. Let that be clear. I withdraw the comparison. It was unfortunate and mistaken on my part, and at the same time I say that, for me, Real Madrid TV is an official club outlet that lies, manipulates, singles out and harasses. That is my opinion without any comparison, and I again apologise for it,” he said.
It was therefore that comparison with “Gara” that triggered the dispute between the journalist and Real Madrid.
