Federico Higuaín dismissed by Columbus Crew after physical assault and sexism allegations involving a referee

Higuaín’s brother, Federico Higuaín, has been permanently dismissed by Columbus Crew following an incident involving a female referee, including physical assault and sexism. The 41-year-old had been coaching the MLS club’s reserve team but will no longer hold that role.

The club accused him of making a racist comment and behaving inappropriately toward the referee. In its statement, Columbus Crew said it had decided that removing Federico Higuaín from his duties was best “for the club, the players and the staff.” After discussions during the week and a more thorough assessment over the past month, the club said it concluded that it did not meet the standards expected of a team leader.

According to the referees’ association, the Argentine reportedly told the referee: “Do not forget that this is a men’s sport.” The association added that the sexist remark was accompanied by two deliberate acts of physical assault: he allegedly gripped her hand tightly and refused to let go despite being asked three times to stop.

Federico Higuaín initially denied everything, and Columbus Crew had imposed only a two-match suspension. But after the referees’ statement, the club chose to dismiss him immediately.

The decision concerns a highly regarded figure at Columbus Crew, where Federico Higuaín spent eight years as a player. The case has therefore damaged his image within the club.
