Javier Aguirre is Valencia’s new coach. The Mestalla club have officially confirmed the Mexican coach’s appointment to lead the first team, on a contract running until 30 June 2027.
The agreement includes an automatic extension until 2028 should Valencia qualify for the Europa League through the league. The contract’s length was one of the main outstanding issues in the negotiations: the club wanted to retain room for manoeuvre at the end of the season, while Aguirre sought greater stability for the project and his staff, with more attainable targets.
Aguirre takes charge of a team in trouble, sitting in the relegation zone with four points after seven matchdays, their worst start in the club’s history at this stage of the competition. His signing was announced two hours before sporting director Braulio Vázquez was officially presented at Mestalla.
The move for Aguirre was led by Braulio Vázquez, who made him his leading candidate to oversee the team’s sporting rebuild, after Ernesto Valverde was ruled out because he wants to complete his sabbatical year. Aguirre’s extensive LaLiga experience was a decisive factor, as was the way his profile fits the immediate need to stabilise a side struggling at the bottom of the table.
The new coach arrives with several trusted members of staff. Toni Amor will be his assistant coach and Pol Lorente his fitness coach; both have worked regularly with the Mexican coach during his most recent professional spells, including with the Mexico national team.
Over the course of his career, Aguirre has coached Osasuna, Atlético, Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganés and Mallorca. He arrives with a reputation as a specialist in the most demanding situations and proven experience in relegation battles, one of the club’s short-term objectives.
The international break is set to give him several weeks of work to implement his initial ideas before his official debut in the Valencia dugout. The club hopes to use that time to correct the shortcomings shown at the start of the championship and begin a new sporting phase under the experienced Mexican coach. The possibility of arranging a friendly match at the end of next week is also being explored.
