Germain Milla, Roger’s son, plays with Celta Fortuna

Germain Milla, the son of former Cameroon striker Roger Milla, plays with Celta Fortuna. At 20, he has reached professional football following the promotion of Celta’s reserve team, which he joined at the end of the 24-25 season after extending his contract for four seasons.

The path brings Roger Milla back to Vigo. In 1982, the Cameroon national team did not lose any of its group matches against Poland, Peru and Italy, despite being eliminated. Its third and final match, against eventual champions Italy, was played at Balaídos, where Milla provided the assist for M’Bida’s goal for the Indomitable Lions.

Forty-four years have passed since 1982. Roger Milla later played at the Italy 90 and United States 94 tournaments with Cameroon. His legacy was also honoured by FIFA in Qatar. The former striker, who played for Monaco, Saint Etienne and Montpellier among others, won two Africa Cups with his national team and can lay claim to being one of the greatest African footballers of all time.

Germain joined Celta’s youth set-up in 2022 through the agreement then in force with Fursan Hispania, a Dubai club founded by Míchel Salgado. Roger Milla was struck by the facilities in which his son was set to develop: “Before, we did not have academies, only one coach. There was nothing like this.”

The son is now following in his father’s footsteps. Germain Milla usually operates on the flank and looks to push forward, although Celta’s website lists him as a defender. He has taken part in all six league rounds played so far, helping Fredi Álvarez’s team to 15th place, still clear of danger with much of the season remaining.

Roger Milla is proudly watching his son’s progress. And as the Celta song says: “Voltarei.”
