Celta concluded its training week with a closed-door match against Santa Clara at Ciudad Deportiva Afouteza. The fixture, played without spectators, provided an opportunity to put the week’s work into practice against a side sitting fourth in the Portuguese league, behind the three leading clubs. Former Celta player Gonçalo Paciencia is Santa Clara’s top scorer.
The choice of opponent served a specific purpose: Claudio Giráldez’s team wanted to work on different tactical principles while keeping its players active. The exercise was aimed in particular at those who have had the least playing time since the start of the league campaign, as well as recent arrivals who did not travel with their national teams. The match’s closed-door format was part of that training work rather than an open fixture for spectators.
The break also allowed the team to address individual needs. Borja Iglesias has been able to regain his fitness and, when play resumes, will be able to contend for playing time from the start of matches. Aleix Febas, meanwhile, had the opportunity to recover physically. The match against Santa Clara therefore rounded off a week focused both on collective tactical work and on getting players with differing needs back into condition.
