Espanyol lost 0-1 to Premier League club Ipswich in a friendly played behind closed doors. The training match came a week before their scheduled away fixture against Málaga, at La Rosaleda, on Friday 9 at 21:00. The English club had requested that no official information about the game be released.
The main development for Espanyol was the first appearance of Andoni Gorosabel, one of the summer signings, in the club’s colours. Bryan Zaragoza and Moscardo also had the chance to build up competitive fitness, alongside Gorosabel.
After the heavy home defeat to Elche, Manolo González had said that changes to personnel or the system could follow when the league resumed. He is reported to have used the friendly to work on those adjustments ahead of the Málaga match. The game against a Premier League side was also expected to prove useful to the coach.
Javi Puado did not play. Having returned to group training several weeks ago after a serious injury, he is edging closer to a comeback. Espanyol also had to manage several absences: injured players Javi Hernández, Jofre and Kike García, as well as Roberto and Drkusic, who were away with their national teams. Ipswich were also without players called up for international duty.
