Aston Villa win the XV Trofeo Antonio Puerta after coming from behind

Aston Villa won the XV Trofeo Antonio Puerta by coming from behind after Isaac Romero’s goal, with Barkley, Garnacho and Jenner finding the net. The match was played at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, where Unai Emery led the English side in a tribute to the « Zurda de Diamantes ».

Emery’s return carried particular resonance: Nervión had been his home between January 2013 and June 2016, a period in which he won three consecutive UEFA Europa League titles. The three trophies were displayed on the pitch alongside Jesús Navas, Coke, Diogo, Javi Varas, Negredo, Fazio, Pareja, Sergio Rico and Vicente Iborra, players who had worked under the coach, as part of a tribute to him.

Isaac Romero opened the scoring with a powerful finish after gathering a loose ball in the area, following a Peque shot blocked by a defender. An academy player thus started the scoring with the number 16 on his back, a nod to Antonio Puerta. Aston Villa then took control of the ball. Fran González denied Hemmings and also stopped a one-on-one chance during a quick Aston Villa move.

Barkley equalised, before Garnacho, having switched wings, put his side ahead with a finish at the far post. Jenner extended the lead by bursting into the area and beating Fran González with a low shot. The match drew 31,410 spectators to the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium.
