Bosnia and Sweden played out a 1-1 draw in a match marked by Edin Dzeko’s farewell to the national team. The 40-year-old striker left the pitch in the 61st minute, bringing his international story to a close after an evening that combined tribute and result.
Dzeko, a Schalke forward, thus hung up his country’s shirt after the sides shared the points. The emotion surrounding his farewell was tempered, however, by Gyokeres’ goal, which affected the mood of the occasion. Dzeko was described as the best player in the country’s history, lending particular significance to this final international appearance.
Supporters had shown their affection for him before the match. As the 11th minute approached, pyrotechnics were set off from buildings near the stadium, extending the tribute beyond the stands.
Dzeko’s international career began in June 2007, when he scored on his debut. He leaves the national team with 152 appearances and 73 goals. The draw with Sweden will therefore be remembered not only for the score, but also as the end of a long international journey for the striker.
