Cristiano Ronaldo’s like reignites controversy in Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo’s like on a post criticising his teammates has reignited controversy in Portugal. The forward’s situation with the national team is far from settled: despite Portugal’s three Nations League victories, the fallout from his departure from the camp continues to grow.

The 41-year-old forward reacted to a message faulting his teammates for what it described as a lack of support and respect towards him in recent days. The post attracted more than 27,000 likes, but Ronaldo’s reaction stood out. His action has brought fresh attention to an issue that had seemed to be easing after Portugal’s three wins.

The post he liked compared the support Ronaldo receives from his teammates with the backing Lionel Messi gets from Argentina’s players. It also argued that Ronaldo continues to command considerable respect from opponents. Melo also emphasised that respect, saying: «I see much more respect from opponents when they play against Cristiano Ronaldo. Yesterday, Hojlund got very angry with Jorge Jesus because his idol is Cristiano Ronaldo, rather than the Portuguese national team. That is wrong, because nobody there comes close to Cristiano Ronaldo. You cannot let him leave as if nothing had happened.»
