Vivian’s experience reflects the sacrifices football can demand. His presence on the pitch was welcomed, particularly because he was able to play without pain.
This week, Vivian explained that he had been dealing with adductor discomfort since January and had chosen not to stop during last season. He made that decision because of the difficult situation facing Athletic. His body eventually forced him to stop in July. The EH Txapela then gave him his first minutes back on the pitch.
Those circumstances can be viewed positively in Vivian’s case, without condemning players who make a different choice. The issue extends beyond his own experience: in recent years, several Athletic players — Guruzeta, Berenguer and Nico Williams — have carried injuries that were not public. Their performances declined and they came under criticism.
Vivian’s return, and his ability to play without pain, therefore bring a tangible perspective to the debate over what players endure before they have to stop.
