United States beat Mexico 3-0 as Cavan Sullivan makes scoring history

The United States beat Mexico 3-0 on Saturday in a match marked by Cavan Sullivan’s long-range chip. Days after turning 17, the young forward became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the US national team. Julian Hall and Malik Tillman also scored. Mexico finished with 10 men, and Tillman added the third goal in the 85th minute.

Mexico made the brighter start, pressing forward while the United States struggled to win the ball back. The American defenders also found it difficult to play through their opponents’ aggressive man-marking. After five minutes of Mexican pressure, the United States adjusted and then took the lead.

Sebastian Berhalter sent the ball toward Alex Freeman on the right. Mexico’s defence was drawn toward Freeman, and Hall scored after Raúl Rangel failed to deal with a low cross from Reyna. Hall, 18, made it his third goal in as many games. He had also scored three times in as many appearances for the United States.

Mexico tried to regain control and often fouled Tillman as he carried the ball forward. But the heavily pro-Mexico crowd began to thin before the interval, with fans queuing for concessions and restrooms. Mexico still created a chance to equalise: after Hall spilled the ball, Santiago Giménez collected it inside the box, close to goal.

Sullivan then extended the United States’ advantage. A poorly weighted pass intended for Diego Campillo fell to him. Rather than hold possession, Sullivan controlled it with his left foot and chipped Rangel. He celebrated beside the corner flag as teammates rushed over.

The match took place in an atmosphere strongly tilted toward Mexico, including in the stands at State Farm Stadium. It also underlined the youth of the United States squad: eight players had not yet been born at the time of the earlier match at the venue referenced in the account. The United States had not played an away game since 2024, and this match in front of a heavily pro-Mexico crowd came close to that experience. Tyler Adams also wore the captain’s armband for the first time under Mauricio Pochettino.
