Alberto González looks back on Albacete’s “epic moments”

“I’m keeping the epic moments” from his time at Albacete: Alberto González chose those words on Sunday at his farewell press conference. Dismissed the previous evening after a defeat to Eibar, the coach reflected on the memories he will take from his spell in charge.

He singled out the first survival, which he said had looked very difficult, followed by the next two. He also recalled the Copa del Rey campaign last season, when his team eliminated Real Madrid and came close to Barcelona.

He said he was leaving “with pain” because he was departing “a project I believe in” and a city that would always remain in his heart. He had experienced important moments there, both professionally and personally, he explained, adding that one of his daughters was born there.

González said he accepted his dismissal as part of the job. He nevertheless believes the decision was not down to the team’s style of play or the standard of the work, but to the results. From now on, he said, he would be “one more supporter”. He believes the squad can climb out of last place and expects results to come once several players who lack match fitness regain their form.

He also expressed gratitude to Albacete and sporting director Toché for giving him the chance to prove himself in professional football. He was proud to have passed the 100-match mark at that level. He leaves, he said, with lasting ties: friends, colleagues and players, as well as memories of a club and city that welcomed him and his family.
