Beñat San José praised the legacy Iñigo Pérez left at Rayo Vallecano, saying he intends to build on the foundations laid by his predecessor. The coach also reiterated that the season’s objective is to “stay in Primera while paying attention to how we earn the points.”
“Íñigo Pérez did a spectacular job, he is a great coach and a great person, and he left a very important legacy,” San José said. He added that the foundation also comes from Andoni Iraola and that he feels it belongs to him too: some parts of the team’s play come naturally to the players, while he is working to refine others.
San José acknowledged the previous season’s exceptional achievements, including reaching the Conference League final, but stressed that such success does not happen every year. “There is realism and happiness among the fans and at the club in what is achieved day by day,” he said at the Skechers Football Lab in Los Ángeles de San Rafael on Sunday.
The coach said he does not see his role as a source of pressure: “It is a privilege to coach Rayo Vallecano.” He said he likes the club’s character and wants to maintain its identity. Winning is essential because it brings points, he noted, but the way the team plays matters too. His aim is to stay in Primera and, if possible, finish the season looking upward.
