Evaristo scored ten hat-tricks for Barça. With 107 goals in official matches, he ranks among the club’s top ten historical scorers, a record that reflects his attacking impact. One of the moments associated with his career was an acrobatic strike in 1960 that helped eliminate Real Madrid from the European Cup for the first time.
Evaristo joined Barça from Flamengo and spent five seasons at the club, from 1957 to 1962. His hat-trick against Real Madrid in the league on October 26, 1958, stands out from that spell. It was the third of his ten hat-tricks in a Barça shirt.
The match report, signed by Carlos Pardo, praised a goal as « de verdadera antología futbolística » and described Evaristo beating three opponents and then the goalkeeper before shooting from a difficult angle. The account of the three goals also sets out how they were built: the first came in the 23rd minute after a pass from Tejada; the second, after the break, followed a solo move against goalkeeper Alonso; the third was finished with a low shot after a pass from Suárez.
A few months ago, Evaristo turned 93. His time at Barça ended in 1962 after he declined the club’s proposal that he seek Spanish nationality so he would not occupy a foreign-player slot.
